2/6/2017 - Sedalia's Budget Process Moves Forward
Sedalia's budget process is well underway. It begins at the end of each calendar year. That's when department heads start preparing their budget requests for the upcoming fiscal year. This year, the City added a second budget public hearing. This allows the public to have input into the budget at the beginning stages as well as at the end of the process.
The City's initial budget prioritization meeting was held on January 7th. Following this session, face-to-face meetings between the budget team and department heads are held. They last for almost two weeks. At that time, it is up to department heads to defend their proposals to the budget team. The budget team is made up of the Mayor, Finance Director and City Administrator. These face-to-face meetings are held in a room with a bank of computers. This allows real-time changes to be made to the budget document during the discussions.
The month of February is devoted to reviewing with the City Council the various budget issues that have evolved. The primary City Council work session this year is on February 27th. The second budget public hearing is on March 6th and final budget approval is scheduled for March 20th.
